There are two tribes among internet users: those who use light mode in their software and those who use dark mode. Being aware of this fact, Notion has satisfied both tribes.
I personally never understood those who use dark mode. For me, it looks just unnatural. Nevertheless, in this short tutorial, I will explain how to make Notion’s dark mode and, while doing so, also try to understand why you might need to do so. If you prefer watching video guides, you may find a video on this topic at the end of this article.
Why Use Dark Mode in Notion?
If you spend long hours working on Notion, dark mode might be the ideal choice. Here are some benefits of enabling it:
- Less stress on the eyes: Bright screens can be tiring, especially in low-light settings. Changing Notion to dark mode can help reduce eye strain.
- Extended battery life: On mobile devices, dark themes consume less power, which can extend your battery life.
- Aesthetic appeal: Dark mode gives Notion a modern, sleek look that many users prefer, especially for late-night work sessions.
How to Make Notion Dark Mode
Enabling dark mode in Notion is actually a pretty simple task. Simply go to any of your Notion pages and locate the Settings menu item in the bottom-left corner of the page, where the menu bar is typically located.

After clicking on it, a modal window will open, and the first thing you’ll find there is Appearance. There, you can find a few options: Light, Dark, and Use system settings. You can use system settings if you want it to be more Dynamic. It will simply follow your system settings, meaning that if it detects that your system uses dark mode, it will be dark; otherwise, it will be light.

However, since we are talking about dark mode here, I`ll just check this dark mode and enjoy it. Note that the settings are applied to the whole Notion account, meaning all the pages you have will now turn to dark mode.
And of course, you can follow the same procedure if you want to turn off dark mode on Notion. You simply choose ‘Light’ in the same menu, and that’s it.
Now that you know how to turn Notion into dark mode and back, I hope it helps make your workspace more comfortable and visually pleasing. Enjoy a more eye-friendly Notion experience!
